This is a 2.5-hour financial education simulation event for high-school students. Each participant will be assigned a personal profile and will experience building a monthly budget based on their income. Learning stations will include scenarios for determining housing, transportation, banking, food, child care, and other needs. During the event:
- Students receive a fictional occupation, salary, spouse, children, student loan and credit card debt, and medical insurance payments through the Bite of Reality app.
- Equipped with their new income and responsibilities, students visit various merchant tables to “purchase” housing, food, transportation, clothing, day care, and other necessities from pushy
- A “Fickle Finger of Fate” roams the event, giving students unexpected “expenses” or “windfalls” just like in real
- Students who make poor choices and run out of money can visit the credit union table for financial advice and tips on creating a budget.
After completing Bite of Reality, students report a greater understanding of important financial habits such as saving money, spending wisely, living within means, and planning for the future. Pizza will be served. Door prizes will be given. And games will be played.
Smartphones will be required to participate. Prior to attending, all students will need to download the "Bite of Reality 2" app (by RMJ Foundation) on a smartphone. This should be done before the event as WIFI will not be available during the event.
