At Skyward Credit Union, your security is our priority. In today’s digital age, fraud and identity theft are becoming more sophisticated. But don’t worry, there are steps you can take to protect yourself and reduce your risk. In partnership with Fight the Fraud Kansas, we’ve compiled some essential tips and resources to help you fight fraud and stay safe.
What is Fraud?
Fraud occurs when someone intentionally deceives you for financial gain. It can take many forms, such as identity theft, phishing scams, or credit card fraud. The consequences can be serious, affecting both your personal finances and your credit score.
1. Be Aware of Common Fraud Types
Understanding the types of fraud is the first step in protecting yourself. Some of the most common include:
- Phishing Scams: Fraudsters often send emails, texts, or phone calls pretending to be from trusted organizations (like your credit union or banks). They ask for personal information or money.
- Identity Theft: Criminals may use your personal details to open accounts, take out loans, or make unauthorized transactions.
- Credit Card Fraud: This occurs when a fraudster gets access to your credit card number and makes unauthorized purchases.
- Social Engineering: This is when scammers manipulate you into providing personal or financial information.
2. Use Strong, Unique Passwords
Your passwords are the first line of defense against fraud. Create strong, unique passwords for your online accounts and avoid using the same password across multiple sites. Consider using a password manager to securely store your credentials.
Tip: A strong password includes a mix of letters (upper and lowercase), numbers, and special characters. Make sure it's at least 12 characters long.
3. Enable Two-Factor Authentication (2FA)
Two-factor authentication adds an extra layer of security by requiring you to verify your identity when logging into your accounts through a second method, such as a text message, email, or authenticator app on your mobile phone. Enabling 2FA can make it harder for fraudsters to access your personal information, even if they have your password.
4. Monitor Your Accounts Regularly
Check your financial and credit card statements regularly to spot any unusual activity. Skyward offers tools that allow you to set up eAlerts for transactions. These alerts can notify you of any charges made to your account, so you can act immediately if needed. It’s easy to sign up for eAlerts in online banking in the Services section.
5. Shred Sensitive Documents
Do you still receive paper statements or documents containing personal information? You should always shred important documents before tossing them in the garbage can. Criminals often go through trash bins looking for sensitive data that can be used to steal your identity. To be extra safe for documents from Skyward Credit Union, sign up for eDocuments in online banking.
6. Be Cautious with Public Wi-Fi
Avoid using public Wi-Fi for sensitive transactions, such as online banking or shopping. Public networks are often not secure, leaving you vulnerable to hackers. If you need to use public Wi-Fi, consider using a Virtual Private Network (VPN) to encrypt your internet connection.
7. Report Suspicious Activity Immediately
If you suspect that you’ve fallen victim to fraud, report it immediately. Early action can help minimize the damage. Contact Skyward and report the fraud to the appropriate authorities including the FTC. Consider placing a fraud alert on your credit report.
You can also file a fraud report through the Kansas Attorney General’s Office at Fight the Fraud Kansas. This site provides valuable resources for victims of fraud, including how to report scams, protect your identity, and get help recovering from fraud.
