Visiting community events and attractions in your area can provide a lot of fun and at the same time help tame your wallet.
With summer fast approaching, it's time to consider warm-weather activities for the family. Here are some money-saving ideas:
- LOCAL FAIRS, MUSEUMS, and COMMUNITY EVENTS. Summertime and the sunny outdoor weather is the perfect combination for entertainment for the whole family. Check out social media and “mommy blogs” online to find information on local programs and festivals.
- DAY TRIPS TO HISTORIC SITES. A simple search online for “Things to do in XX” will direct you to a plethora of activities and historic sites to visit in your state. Learn about the heritage of your community. Better yet, volunteer to become a docent or tour guide for others.
LIBRARY PROGRAMS. The library is more than just books on a shelf. Many libraries offer children’s story-time programs, reading contests, and even movies. Also, check your local library for learning sessions on everything from mobile phone basics to craft ideas.
- GROW A GARDEN. Are you interested in greening up your yard? Or planting new blooms? Check out your local extension center and 4-H clubs for know-how and ideas on what to plant. Get ideas from visiting the local botanical gardens for local vegetation. Even the local farmer’s market can offer amazing plants to start or add to your garden. Get the kids away from the computer screen by involving them in planting and maintaining a garden.
- LAWN GAMES. Summertime is the perfect time for treasure hunting, croquet games, cornhole, and sprinkler fun. Get out in the sun and get to know your backyard!
- CAMPING. Wherever you live you will be able to find camping sites within a short distance from home. Camping out with the family—or even by yourself—can be the perfect getaway from over-exposure to phone screens, 24/7 news blasts, and other daily stresses. For a small amount, you can rent a camping space. If you are looking for a deal on camping equipment, look at local Goodwill Stores or other secondhand shops. If you don’t want to travel away from home, look no further than your backyard. Kids love sleeping outside under the stars.
- GAME NIGHT OR MOVIE NIGHT WITH TREATS. One of the most endearing traditions with many families is game night—whether it’s a fun board or card game or an action game such as Twister or Charades. Involve the kids in making treats for the evening and put down mobile phones. This is great family time!
Remember, you don’t have to spend a lot to have a lot of fun! Resources for activities are as close as your search bar. If you are in the state of Kansas (as many of our members are), you can find much to do at TravelKS.com/Things-to-do.
